8 Yugi Muto (Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters)

Yu-Gi-Oh: Every Main Character's Age, Height, And Birthday (1)

Perhaps the original King Of Games, Yugi Muto serves as the protagonist of the first Yu-Gi-Oh! series alongside his spirit partner Yami Yugi. Despite his short stature (he is the shortest of the protagonists, at only 5 feet tall), Yugi has an extremely kind heart. And while still capable of anger, Yugi’s caring nature makes him extremely forgiving.

While he’s shy about his abilities, Yugi isn’t to be underestimated when it comes to puzzles and riddles. This helped him complete the Millennium Puzzle, which allowed its spirit, Yami Yugi, to possess him. This spirit, also known as the Nameless Pharaoh, is a powerful duelist. And despite his vast psychic abilities, he prefers to use it to inflict punishment on people who wrong others. It’s thanks to the partnership of these duelists that threats like other Millennium Item spirits, ancient cults, ghosts of the past, and even a VR realm couldn’t stand a chance.

7 Judai Yuki (Yu-Gi-Oh! GX)

When Seto Kaiba established the Duel Academy after the events of the original series, Judai Yuki was one of its many students and is the protagonist of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX. Having failed the entrance exam (despite winning against his instructor, Vellian Crowler), Judai is assigned to Slifer Red, the student group with the fewest privileges. Throughout the seasons, Judai proved his skill and expertise using his Elemental Hero Deck and knack for fusions. This interest in dueling is reflected in his academics, where he often chooses to sleep in class but actively participates in duels.

His lax attitude makes him both enemies and friends. While the latter part of the series would show Judai as more serious and cynical due to spiritual upheavals, he recovers his love for dueling by the end of the series. While he graduates as the Academy’s best duelist (having even saved the world a few times), Judai is never relegated past Slifer Red status.

6 Yusei Fudo (Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s)

Yu-Gi-Oh: Every Main Character's Age, Height, And Birthday (3)

The devastating future of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s is home to violence and desperation, with Yusei Fudo and his friends depending on Duel Runner-based Turbo Dueling to survive. Armed with his signature card “Stardust Dragon” and his expertise in Synchro Summoning, Yusei is soon introduced into his destiny as a Signer, and must unite other bearers of the Mark Of The Dragons to help save the world.

Arguably the most serious among the protagonists, Yusei on the outside is calm, serious, and clear-minded even in dire situations. In truth, he’s extremely selfless, protective, and noble. Like other protagonists, Yusei sees his friends as his most cherished riches, and treats his cards with equal esteem. In the world of 5D’s, Yusei’s level-headedness has more than once saved the world from catastrophe.

5 Yuma Tsukumo (Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal)

Yu-Gi-Oh: Every Main Character's Age, Height, And Birthday (4)

Like other protagonists, Yuma Tsukumo of Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal aims to become the best duelist out there — and unlike other protagonists, Yuma doesn’t necessarily have the skills yet. Throughout the series, Yuma challenges himself to improve his dueling, especially with Xyz Summoning, which seems appropriate after he’s become a Numbers Hunter to help his spiritual companion Astral regain his memories.

While Yuma’s journeys seem to hold defeat after defeat, this doesn’t stifle his spirit. That’s because he’s inherited his father’s “kattobingu” (“feeling the flow” as per the dub) attitude, which constantly encourages him to go all the way in his pursuits. His energetic attitude might annoy others, but it’s certainly brought joy to people he encounters, often enlightening them to things they thought they lost in their lives.

4 Yuya Sakaki (Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V)

In the future of Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V, even duelists can attend schools to become entertainers. Protagonist Yuya Sakaki comes from such a school, called You Show Duel Show, in order to become a Dueltainer like his father. He pioneers a unique kind of card mechanic called Pendulum Summoning, which is the center of his dueling strategy. Yuya will need this in his dimension-hopping incursions within the Xyz Dimension, the Synchro Dimension, and the Fusion Dimension.

Despite the tense nature of Arc-V’s interdimensional war, Yuya remains energetic and willing to entertain others. While his antics make people believe he isn’t taking things seriously, he’s a calm and tactical duelist that reserves his theatrical prowess whenever he finishes off opponents.

3 Yusaku Fujiki (Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS)

Yu-Gi-Oh: Every Main Character's Age, Height, And Birthday (6)

Despite Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS having a more carefree ambiance due to its VR elements, it packs a heavy story, especially with protagonist Yusaku Fujiki. A former victim of the Hanoi Project, Yusaku still experiences trauma from having been forced to duel to avoid punishment. After his release from captivity, Yusaku decided to put an end to his horrific experience by hunting his kidnappers, the Knights of Hanoi, in the virtual dueling space LINK VRAINS.

Under the alias Playmaker, he is accompanied by the AI called Ai to achieve justice. Yusaku isn’t just a skilled hacker, but is also good at keeping his tracks clean. When he plays as a Playmaker, he often uses a dummy deck in public to avoid being spotted. Yusaku is also good at reading people, which he uses in duels to predict enemy strategies. Outside duels, however, Yusaku is colder and more aloof due to his past. Part of his journey in the anime is breaking down these emotional walls as he slowly resolves his traumatic experiences.

2 Yuga Ohdo (Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens)

Yu-Gi-Oh: Every Main Character's Age, Height, And Birthday (7)

Perhaps the youngest among all protagonists, Yuga Ohdo of Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens starts the anime as a measly 11-year-old with a keen interest in dueling. A natural at machines, Yuga loves tinkering with them to repurpose them into new tools. He used this approach when he created Speed Dueling, a more fast-paced dueling style separate from the standard Master Duels that “most adults” play.

Despite being a youngster, Yuga is extremely intelligent, inventive, and enthusiastic, and as a result has a bit of a rebellious streak. Regardless, he remains extremely selfless. At one point, Yuga forfeited the title of King of Duels, as he never had the intention of being one, and instead solely wanted to keep dueling fun for everyone.

1 Yudias Velgear (Yu-Gi-Oh! Go Rush!!)

Yu-Gi-Oh: Every Main Character's Age, Height, And Birthday (8)

In the wackier world of Yu-Gi-Oh! Go Rush!!, siblings Yuhi and Yuamu Ohdo run UTS or Ultraterrestrial Trouble Solutions that “solves” problems regarding “aliens” while they research for the real deal. This was until one fateful day, their journey to a crop circle not only leads them to a spaceship, but also to an actual alien called Yudias Velgear who has come from the Velgar Star Cluster.

According to Yudias, he’s a space soldier who fled his planet and went to Earth where he learned about Rush Duels, the new format introduced in the anime. There’s not a lot of information about Yudias yet, but judging by his police officer outfit, it’s implied that he has a strong sense of justice and nobility, coupled with potentially hilarious moments in which he slowly adjusts to Earth’s lifestyle.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Go Rush!! began on April 3, 2022.
