How many miles do VW diesels last? ›

A well-maintained TDI engine can actually last up to 400,000 to 500,000 miles.

VW phased out diesel engines in the US and Canada after the automaker's diesel crisis in 2015, buying back tens of thousands of vehicles. VW has no timeframe for halting the sale of new diesel models, as demand is expected to remain in several regions. But expect EU legislation in the mid-2030s to end diesel sales.

Heads always need rebuilding by 300-400k miles (guides, seals etc) but pistons and rings okay still. Way more durable then older VW diesels, I would say very similar to Benz diesel in quality now. Maintenace is key and a careful owner for long life.

You can count on at least 700 miles per tankful on the open highway. A Jetta TDI will easily get more than 50 miles per US gallon when cruising at a reasonable speed. The only drawback to TDIs that I can think of is that you need to plan on keeping the car at least 100,000 miles.
