A man was brutally attacked with a steak knife by an individual he had previously saved in a horrifying assault. The victim had earlier helped Alan Dugdale after he overdosed outside his home in Byker, Newcastle.

When Dugdale later showed up at the man's residence with his partner Jamie Burrows, the victim allowed them inside, according to court proceedings. Prosecutor Jessica Slaughter informed Newcastle Crown Court that the trio had been drinking when the couple proposed a threesome.

The victim consented but found himself under attack from Dugdale while engaging in a sexual act with Burrows. Miss Slaughter detailed: "He was screaming that he was raping his girlfriend. He hit him to the head.

"He grabbed a steak knife and assaulted the victim, inflicting various cuts and stab wounds, and even kicked him in the face at one point. He doused a bottle of bleach over his clothes in the bedroom."

The assailants demanded passcodes for the victim's phone and tablet, which he provided in hopes they would leave. Burrows suggested taking the victim to a cash machine, but Dugdale dismissed the idea and threatened the victim with arson if he reported the incident to the police.

They then fled, pilfering his phone, tablet, clothing and tobacco. The victim was left blood-soaked and struggling to see out of one eye.

After a brutal assault that left him with a broken nose, multiple slash and puncture wounds, and other injuries from being punched and kicked, the victim managed to reach his mate's place and call for an ambulance.

In a heart-wrenching victim impact statement, he expressed feeling betrayed for having previously helped Dugdale during an overdose, only to be repaid with a savage beating.

Upon her arrest, Burrows alleged she had been sexually assaulted by the victim, while Dugdale claimed he was merely defending his partner, as per the court proceedings.

Judge Tim Gittins described the assault as "gruesome" and suggested there might have been a calculated plot to frame the victim with a bogus sexual assault claim, but he decided not to dwell on that angle.

Addressing Dugdale, Judge Gittins said: "You armed yourself with a steak knife and assaulted him in a sustained fashion, slashing and lashing out. The pictures are horrendous."

Dugdale owned up to robbery and possession of a bladed article, while Burrows confessed to robbery, acknowledging she egged on Dugdale during the altercation but claimed she didn't know about any weapons and retreated from the scene.

Burrows also fessed up to burgling a bloke's flat in Heaton back in August 2019, nicking valuables worth over £1,700, and admitted to handling stolen goods related to that crime.

Dugdale, 51, from Laurel Street, Wallsend, a seasoned criminal with a rap sheet of 100 previous convictions, including 18 for burglary, also fessed up to assaulting the police during another nicking.

The career crook has been thrown in the slammer for a whopping 12 years and four months and slapped with an indefinite restraining order to keep him away from the robbery victim. His partner in crime, Burrows, 37, who's currently of no fixed abode and boasts 60 prior convictions, is set to hear his fate on April 28.

John Crawford, defending Dugdale, claimed the robbery was nothing but a "spontaneous incident".
